2001: LIDL is Set to Settle in Madeira

Back in 2001, LIDL formally requested approval from the Regional Government to open stores in Machico, Cancela, and Funchal, with an additional potential site in Câmara de Lobos. Local authorities began evaluating these plans, but the project faced various delays, from complex zoning approvals to shifting regulations. Every few years, LIDL would renew its commitment to Madeira, but the stores never materialized.

The Machico City Council has already received the preliminary project for the site, though Councilman Abel Viveiros notes it is still under review. Local government awaits final authorization from the Regional Government, as required by law.
