Setting Records and Overcoming Challenges
Mayra Santos, a resilient Brazilian swimmer residing in Madeira, recently accomplished a remarkable feat by completing a 32-kilometer swim around Portugal's Porto Santo Island.
Mayra Santos initiated the challenging swim on December 11 at 7 a.m. from Cais Velho on Ilha Dourada, with the original estimate predicting a 12-hour duration. Astonishingly, she surpassed expectations, concluding the swim in 11 hours, 19 minutes, and 52 seconds.
While navigating the open waters, Mayra encountered unforeseen challenges, including an eye infection caused by water entering her goggles. Remarkably, she swam a significant portion of the route with one eye closed, emphasizing the greater discomfort in her eyes compared to muscle fatigue.
Warm Reception and Future Aspirations
Upon completing the challenging swim, Mayra Santos was welcomed by hundreds of spectators at the dock. Mayra described the moment as highly anticipated, with a multitude of people waiting and a deep emotional inclination.
Mayra Santos, already a holder of two world records in static swimming, has set her sights on an even more ambitious goal. Her next objective is to cover the greatest oceanic distance with a planned 144-kilometer swim around Madeira Island. This undertaking presents bureaucratic challenges, and Mayra actively seeks support for this daring project.
