Retired Rodoeste Buses Turn Up in London
According to an article by Diário de Notícias da Madeira, two buses from the Madeira-based transport company Rodoeste were recently seen in the suburbs of London, catching the attention of locals familiar with the company's iconic colors. The appearance of these buses so far from their usual routes raised questions about how they ended up in England?!
Fleet Renewal Leads to International Sale
Rodoeste, which recently invested €13 million in a new fleet of 68 buses, faced the challenge of retiring its older vehicles. As part of the fleet renewal, some buses were scrapped or donated, while others were sold. Two vintage Volvo buses, built in 1981 and 1985, were sold to collectors in the U.K. for approximately €2,500 each. Despite their age and high mileage, the buses were still in running condition, attracting interest from British enthusiasts who had previously visited Madeira to inspect and test them.
The Buses’ 900-Kilometer Journey to England, to Be Used in Exhibitions
Diário de Notícias da Madeira further reports that The buses were shipped from Lisbon to Santander, Spain, on October 14, before crossing by ferry to southern England. From there, they made their way to Chesterfield, about 80 kilometers from Manchester. The buses are now expected to be used in exhibitions and events celebrating transport history.
