Alleged Femicide in Machico, As Children Lose Their Mother
The tragic murder of a 44-year-old woman in Machico, Madeira, has left family and friends in shock. This devastating event unfolded in her home on Vereda do Barqueiro, Machico, where she was discovered with a deep neck wound. The incident was reported to authorities around noon. The victim leaves behind two young children.
In 2024 there is no record of homicides in the Region in the context of domestic violence so far.
Husband is The Main Suspect, He Attempted Suicide
The primary suspect in this case is the victim's husband, who was found attempting suicide at a viewpoint in Caniçal shortly after the murder. Witnesses reported that the 52-year-old was heavily medicated and in possession of a knife. The couple appeared to have had a friendly relationship just hours before the tragedy, leading friends and family to express disbelief over the violent outcome.
The 52-year-old killer fled the scene. He would be detained near the Caniçal viewpoint, after ingesting a large amount of medication. He had the murder weapon in his possession. He is hospitalized, under PSP detention, at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, Funchal.
Victim Pronounced Dead Upon Arrival of Emergency
Upon arrival, emergency responders from the Machico Municipal Firefighters found the victim unresponsive in the bathroom. Despite their efforts, the woman known as a beautician was pronounced dead at the scene due to severe blood loss. The investigation is being conducted by the Polícia Judiciária, who are piecing together the events leading up to the homicide.
Machico Community in Mourning
The loss has deeply affected the Machico community, where the victim was well-known. Friends and family gathered outside the funeral agency, overwhelmed by grief as they waited for the body to be transported for further examination. One friend remarked, “She was always cheerful; no one could have predicted this.” The murder stands as the first fatal case of domestic violence in Madeira in 2024.
