Recent data reveals that 58% of individuals over the age of 18 are classified as overweight or obese. This health condition is linked to several chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. As obesity rates increase, there is growing concern among healthcare professionals, emphasizing the need for effective solutions and interventions to address the issue.

Decrease in Alcohol Consumption Among 18-Year-Olds in Madeira
On a different health-related note, alcohol consumption among 18-year-olds in Madeira has seen a positive decrease in recent years. In 2023, 74.4% of young people in this age group reported having tried alcohol, which is notably lower than the national average of 80.7%. This reduction in alcohol use is viewed as a positive outcome, reflecting the success of preventative measures and public health initiatives aimed at raising awareness and reducing underage drinking.
In severe drunkenness, 29.7% of eighteen-year-olds in 2023 had experienced severe intoxication, compared to the national average of 35.9%. Even so, this is encouraging as it reflects the prevention work done by the community
Cannabis Use Among Youth in Madeira
20.6% of 18-year-olds in the region have tried cannabis, a slight decrease from previous years. Nationally, the rate is higher, with 27.2% of young people reporting cannabis use. In summary, while Madeira has seen positive trends in reducing alcohol consumption and addressing obesity, these public health issues continue to require focused attention and ongoing efforts to improve the health and well-being of the population.
