Tourist Attraction Closed for Almost 4 Years
Since March 2020, the São Vicente Caves have been closed due to damage caused by an earthquake.
The earthquake caused considerable damage. Rockfalls occurred in various areas of the caves, some of which were large enough to block passages and make certain areas unsafe for visitors. Structural damage was also observed, including cracks in the cave walls and ceilings.
Since 2020, the closure has been extended multiple times as the owners assessed the damage and undertook repair efforts.
Reopening 2024: Exact Date Yet to be Announced
After careful revision and maintenance works, the caves are now scheduled to reopen next year.
While an exact date has yet to be announced, the reopening will hopefully revive tourism for the caves and affiliated third-party businesses, which, despite the volcanism center and the souvenir shop already being staffed and open, have suffered greatly from the lack of tourism.
Sao Vicente Caves were formed 890 thousand years ago, from a volcanic eruption that occurred in Paul da Serra that descended to the sea. They have been discovered by locals in 1885 and have been a main tourist attraction since 2020.
