400,000 Euros Investment Already Paid Off
The sinking of the corvette Afonso Cerqueira off Cabo Girão in 2018 proved to be a successful investment for the region. Over the course of three and a half years, nearly 9,000 dives have been recorded, generating significant activity and revenue from marine-related tourism. The region's investment of over 400,000 euros in the sinking has already paid off through the influx of visitors drawn to the sea, particularly around the Garajau Nature Reserve, the country's first marine reserve established in 1986.

More Vessels To Be Sunk In The Future
In addition to the Afonso Cerqueira, the region has also sunk the corvette Pereira D’Eça off Porto Santo. Over the same three-and-a-half-year period, this site has recorded approximately 12,000 dives, further demonstrating the appeal and economic potential of maritime tourism in the region. Looking ahead, there are plans to sink more vessels in regional waters, reflecting a continued commitment to leveraging the natural beauty and resources of the sea for sustainable economic development and environmental conservation.
