Águas E Resíduos Da Madeira Urges Public To Conserve Water

Águas e Resíduos da Madeira urges residents to limit water use to essential needs due to strain from recent wildfires.

Postpone Non-Essential Uses to Support Recovery Efforts in Madeira

Águas e Resíduos da Madeira (ARM), the regional water and waste management company, has issued a public plea urging residents to conserve water and use it only for essential purposes, such as drinking, meal preparation, and personal hygiene. This appeal comes in response to the strain on water resources caused by the recent wildfires that have swept across parts of the island. ARM emphasized that non-essential activities, including washing cars, cleaning patios, watering gardens, and hosing down public roads, should be postponed. "These activities can be delayed for a few days," the company advised, highlighting the importance of prioritizing water for crucial needs.

The company explained that several water systems in areas affected by the fires are still in the process of recovery. In the wake of the wildfires, which began on August 14th in the mountains of Ribeira Brava and subsequently spread to the municipalities of Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol, and Santana, the local water supply has been under pressure. The combination of high water consumption and the ongoing heatwave has further complicated efforts to ensure adequate water availability. The fires have not only caused significant damage to the landscape but also put a strain on vital infrastructure, necessitating a community-wide effort to manage resources carefully as recovery efforts continue.
