Acquisition of Additional Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawks Announced
The Portuguese Air Force has confirmed the purchase of three additional Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, aimed at enhancing its capacity to combat rural fires. The delivery of the first two helicopters is scheduled for 2025, with the third expected in 2026. The acquisition was finalized on September 6 through a public tender with Ace Aeronautics, LLC.
EU Provides Funding, As Air Force Expands Fleet
The purchase is partially funded by approximately 81% from the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The new helicopters will increase the Air Force's firefighting fleet to nine choppers
, complementing the six Black Hawks previously acquired. This expansion aligns with the government's initiative to bolster the country's firefighting capabilities.
12 Firefighters And Almost 3000 Liters Capacity
The contract includes comprehensive training for six pilots and 18 mechanics. The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters are equipped to transport a full team of 12 firefighters and can carry up to 2,950 liters of water per drop. For comparison, that is half as much as the Canadair CL-415 airplanes and three times as much as the currently stationed helicopter in Madeira can carry. They offer a flight autonomy of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Air Force has emphasized that the crews will undergo rigorous training through 2026 to ensure operational proficiency.

Water Carrying Capacity: Can be outfitted with a specialized external bucket (Bambi Bucket), carrying up to 2,950 liters (780 gallons) of water or fire retardant in each drop.
Quick Deployment: Its speed and maneuverability allow it to reach wildfire zones quickly, reducing response times and preventing fire escalation.
Versatility: The helicopter’s multi-mission capabilities allow it to transport firefighters, evacuate civilians, and conduct water drops, making it a flexible tool in firefighting operations.
Durability and Reliability: Designed for military missions, the Black Hawk is robust, capable of operating in harsh environments, and can withstand challenging firefighting conditions.
Historical Context and Future Plans
Since 2018, the Air Force has managed the state's firefighting assets, transitioning from prior arrangements. Additionally, the Air Force will integrate two DHC-515 Firefighter aircraft into its operations, with deliveries anticipated in 2029 and 2030, supported by both EU and national funding.
