Alberto João Jardim: Agreement With Chega Unacceptable In Madeira

Former Madeira President (1978-2015) rejects agreement with Chega, opposing current PSD leader Miguel Albuquerque.

Alberto João Jardim Speaks Out Against Chega

Alberto João Jardim, former president of the Government of Madeira, emphasized an agreement between the PSD and Chega in the region is unacceptable, asserting that extremism, whether left or right, is wrong. He made these remarks during a conference in Ponta Delgada, Azores. Jardim commended José Manuel Bolieiro, the leader of the Azores executive, expressing confidence in him despite being a political opponent of Madeira's current government head, Miguel Albuquerque.

Jardim Opposes Miguel Albuquerque

By stating that he refuses for the PSD to make a deal with Chega, he openly opposes party leader and president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque, who recently stated that there should be no red lines regarding Chega.

It would be fatal for the PSD if we were to go into the elections with our negotiating capacity diminished.

Chega Coalition Okay In Azores, But Not In Madeira

In contrast to a parliamentary agreement in the Azores between PSD Açores and Chega, Jardim argued that the situations of the two archipelagos differ significantly. He emphasized his opposition to such an alliance in Madeira, citing the region's critical situation and perceived loss of influence beyond its borders, both nationally and within the European Union.

Madeira is going through a critical situation. Above all, I think it has lost strength outside Madeira, both in Lisbon and in the European Union.
