Madeira’s President Calls for Long-Term Planning of a New Airport
Mdeira’s president Miguel Albuquerque, has suggested the need for forward-thinking when it comes to the island’s air travel infrastructure. Speaking on Monday, Albuquerque proposed consideration of a second airport in Madeira, stressing that the idea is not thought to be implemented immediately. “It’s not an unreasonable idea,” he stated. “It is not for now. It is not for my time.”
Where Could A Second Madeira Airport be Built?
Madeira's difficult terrain barely offers locations for a second airport. But it is not a new topic. Past suggestions, such as creating an airport in PaĂşl da Serra, a proposal brought forward by a Canadian engineering firm, were dismissed due to high costs, environmental concerns, and accessibility challenges. In an era focused on environmental conservation, climate change and overtourism - it appears almost impossible to go through with such a project.
If we change the wind limit parameters by 3 knots, we can enable 80 percent of the flights currently affected.
Investment in Air and Digital Connections Highlighted
In his remarks, Albuquerque further highlighted the importance of strengthening both air travel and digital connectivity. He believes that investing in these two key areas will secure Madeira’s long-term growth and development. The island’s current airport often faces operational challenges due to unpredictable weather, impacting flights and causing delays.
