All Aboard! Madeira's Buses See Rise In Passenger Numbers

Madeira's public bus system improvements and free ride policies for certain demographics are boosting bus passenger numbers.

13% More Bus Passengers In Madeira

In the first quarter of 2024, the number of bus passengers in Madeira increased by 13%. According to data from the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released this Monday, public bus transport recorded a total of 7.7 million passengers during this period.

Urban Bus Routes On The Rise

Urban bus routes saw a significant rise, transporting 5.1 million passengers, which is a 17.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023. In contrast, interurban routes accounted for 2.6 million passengers, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year.

Is Public Transportation On The Rise?

This data highlights a notable growth in the usage of public bus transportation, reflecting a shift in passenger habits and possibly indicating improvements in the public transportation system or a rise in public transport demand. New Iveco buses have arrived on the island, and with crowded tourist hotspots, there appears to be an increased awareness of the need to improve public transportation. However, there is no additional evidence to suggest that bus rides are becoming the new normal mode of transportation.

Free Bus Rides Are A Likely Reason

One possible reason for this significant increase is the new policy that allows both elderly and younger people to use the bus for free, which was implemented at the beginning of 2024.
