What Happened at The São Brás Festival?
Throughout the day, more info on the alleged murder in Campanario have emerged. Diário de NotÃcias Madeira reports, that the crime took place long after the official festivities of the religious festival of São Brás in Campanario were over and when lights were already turned off. The 36-year-old victim, Artur Sousa, then got stabbed twice in the neck. The attacker was drunk and has later been detained by police. Everything suggests that this will be investigated as a murder case.
Fatal Stab Wounds
At least one of the two stab wounds that were inflicted on Artur Sousa would later prove to be fatal. However, Sousa was able to walk another 50 more meters, despite being heavily injured. He walked towards his father’s booth who was having a food and drink stand at the festival site. Apparently and again according to Diário Madeira, he then died next to his father.
Who was Artur Sousa?
Artur Sousa was widely described as a peaceful, calm and helpful young man who never caused trouble and who was loved by his family. According to Diário de NotÃcias Madeira, he was a former soldier. JM-Madeira reports that he was working in the construction sector, together with his father, and that Artur Sousa lived nearby the crime scene. His family, devastated by recent events, have been offered a cancellation of the event. Despite their grief, the family requested that religious celebrations proceed as planned. Over a thousand people later took part in the festival procession, honoring Artur Sousa.
There we had a few moments of silence and the priest took a flower from the São Brás tree and placed it in the place where Artur Sousa had died.
