A Journey Back to the Old West Through Music
One of the brightest moments of the 175th anniversary celebrations for the Banda Municipal do Funchal, Artistas Funchalenses, was their special commemorative concert. It was an evening dedicated to the work of the deceased Italian composer - the maestro - Ennio Morricone (1928 - 2020).
The first six pieces were purely instrumental. They carried the audience away to the dusty roads and dramatic sunsets of the Old West. Morricone, known for his unforgettable scores in what people sometimes call Spaghetti Westerns, was honored with pieces like Giù la testa and Per un pugno di dollari. There was also a special segment, Momento Morricone, that highlighted just how deeply his music can stir the soul.
For this special concert, the band - founded on February 18, 1850 - was joined by the southern trumpeter Mário Pinto. The performance also featured the Corte Câmara da Madeira and soprano Cláudia Souza.
A Theater Nearly Full, and Hearts Even Fuller
The Teatro Baltasar Dias was, if not completely full, then nearly there - a few empty seats scattered here and there, perhaps. But it didn’t seem to matter much. And perhaps that is the best tribute that could be offered to Morricone - and to the 175 years of Artistas Funchalenses.
