Drivers to Decide at Dawn Whether Strike Will Proceed
The strike by public transport drivers in Madeira, scheduled for tomorrow, is still set to take place and is expected to impact Horários do Funchal, CAM, and Siga Rodoeste. However, the final decision will be made by workers in the early hours of the morning.
Manuel Oliveira, a union leader from the National Union of Drivers and Other Workers (SNMOT), confirmed that the strike remains scheduled unless instructed otherwise. Workers will be consulted at dawn regarding the conclusions of a meeting held earlier, after which they will decide whether to proceed with the strike or not.
What is The Strike About?
Bus drivers in Funchal protested for better pay and working conditions, demanding a wage increase from €1,036 per month (gross), which hasn't changed in nine years. They also called for reduced working hours, from 39 to 35 hours per week. Union leaders accused employers of illegal pressure tactics during the strike, while the drivers pushed for inflation-adjusted salaries and fair compensation.
There have been no raises in ticket prices or wages, and we are losing purchasing power every year.

A meeting was held on Wednesday between the union, Horários do Funchal’s management, and the regional secretary for infrastructure, Pedro Fino. However, the union leader did not disclose details, stating that workers would be informed first before any public announcement. The final decision is expected to be made around 06:00.
