Path to Popular Beach Closed Due to Safety Concerns
Residents of Caniço, Madeira, are upset about the closure of a pathway leading to Canavieira Beach, a favorite spot for locals. They say the path, which has always been public, was closed by a private entity, leading some to consider starting a petition to reopen it.
Safety Issues Prompted Closure in 2018
Milton Teixeira, president of the Caniço Parish Council, explained that the path was initially closed in 2018 after a safety inspection. Inspectors found serious hazards, including unstable railings, loose rocks, and large cracks, making the path unsafe for public use. The closure was necessary to prevent accidents.
Council Exploring Ways to Reopen Access
While Teixeira acknowledged the decision was difficult, he said safety had to come first. The council is now working with specialists to explore options for improving the path and possibly reopening it, as long as it can be done without risking public safety or straining the council’s budget.
Council Confirms Pathway Is Private but May Be Reopened to Public
In an interview with Antena 1, Teixeira confirmed that the closed path is currently private property. However, he added that there is a possibility it could be reopened as a public path in the future. The council is now exploring options with experts to assess whether the path can be safely restored for public use, without compromising the council’s financial stability.
