Lynx Returns To His Family In Funchal Amidst Legal Proceedings
Bores, the desert lynx that had been seized by authorities in Madeira will be returned to its owners, the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture, Fisheries, and the Environment announced today. Bored will remain in the custody of its owners "until the conclusion of the administrative offense proceedings and the respective final decision," according to the statement.
Ajuda Alimentar Cães Launched Petition To Save The Lynx
The decision comes after a petition by the animal welfare group Ajuda Alimentar Cães circulated on social media urging the return of the lynx. The Secretariat has confirmed that they received the petition and will forward it to the Ministry of Environment and Energy for consideration. The lynx was initially seized by the GNR (National Republican Guard) during a search warrant, as the owners could not provide the necessary documentation for its possession. Desert lynxes are listed in Annex II-B of the EU Regulation on the protection of wild fauna and flora, which means their trade is subject to restrictions and controls.
After more than eleven thousand people had signed the petition and with a veterinary report stating that it would be in the best interest of the lynx, the authorities decided to return it to its original owners.

Compassion Prevails, For Now
This decision has sparked debate about the legality of keeping animals as pets and the adequacy of current regulations. The petition and the subsequent decision highlight the complex issues surrounding wildlife conservation and ownership. For now, the animal is safe, a decision that was the right one to take.
