Dispute Over Extraordinary Congress Request Causes Controversy
In a strongly worded statement issued on January 17, former PSD-Madeira official Manuel António Correia criticized the current party leadership for rejecting a request for an Extraordinary Congress. The decision, made after 25 days of deliberation, has not yet been officially communicated to Correia, who described the move as a "disrespectful affront" to party members.
We are facing blatant disrespect and yet another affront to PSD members."
"This is a low-level power play aimed at restricting the freedom and rights of PSD-Madeira members," the statement reads.

Allegations of Undermining Democratic Processes
Correia accused the party president of overstepping his authority and violating PSD-Madeira's statutes by dismissing the congress request. He stated, "The president dismissed this before even reviewing the formal petition, showing a lack of respect for the party’s procedures." Correia also raised concerns about delays in verifying signatures, questioning why a process he claims could be done in 30 minutes took nearly a month.
Claims of Obstruction and Lack of Transparency
Further allegations point to deliberate actions to block the initiative, such as denying access to party headquarters and preventing members from updating their dues. Correia asserted that over 300 of the 540 signatories had fulfilled their obligations, challenging the party leadership to prove otherwise. "This is not just incompetence; it’s an insult to the members and an attempt to stifle their voices," he said, calling the handling of the matter "opaque and unserious."
this situation is a reflection of a PSD-Madeira captured by an oligarchy, which, in addition to disrespecting and demonstrating fear of militants, finds itself at the service of a president who clings to power even against the will of the majority

A Party Divided Over Leadership
Correia’s remarks underscored deepening divides within PSD-Madeira. He described the leadership as an "oligarchy" serving only the president's interests, accusing them of clinging to power at the expense of democratic principles.
Plans to Mobilize Support for Change
In closing, Correia pledged to continue advocating for transparency and democracy within PSD-Madeira. He announced plans to engage directly with party members to determine the next steps, reiterating his commitment to a more open and democratic future for both the party and the region.
