DECO Highlights Air Passenger Rights Issues At Madeira Airport

Have you faced flight cancellations in Madeira recently? DECO is raising concerns about the airport’s failure to keep passengers informed amid severe weather disruptions.

DECO Criticizes Lack of Information at Madeira Airport

The Portuguese consumer protection association DECO has issued a warning about violations of air passenger rights at Madeira's Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, as reported by Jornal da Madeira. According to DECO, the airport has failed to provide adequate information to travelers affected by recent severe weather conditions that have led to multiple flight cancellations and delays. Paulo Fonseca, head of DECO’s Legal and Economic Department, expressed concern over the lack of timely updates given to passengers.

"The consumer has the right to be informed about delays and cancellations, and this information must be provided promptly

Paulo Fonseca, head of DECO’s Legal and Economic Department as quoted by Jornal da Madeira.

Flight Cancellations and Disruptions

On August 19, Jornal da Madeira reported that two flights from Lisbon operated by TAP were canceled early in the morning, at 00:15 and 01:10. Additionally, a flight from Porto scheduled to depart for Funchal at 17:30 was also canceled. The Madeira Airport’s official website lists the cancellations and updates, but travelers have reported inadequate communication and support during the disruptions, according to Jornal da Madeira.

Passenger Rights and Assistance

DECO emphasized that passenger rights remain intact even under exceptional circumstances like adverse weather, as detailed by Jornal da Madeira. Fonseca highlighted that passengers are entitled to assistance, including free meals and beverages, proportional to their waiting time until their flight is rescheduled.

In the event of a significant delay or cancellation, passengers also have the right to accommodation if an overnight stay is required. DECO has noted that this is a major issue at Madeira Airport, where passengers often face challenges finding information or accommodations.

Calls for Better Contingency Planning

DECO has urged both the Regional Government and national authorities to establish better contingency plans to protect passengers during massive disruptions. As reported by Jornal da Madeira, the association has been advocating for improved support mechanisms at Madeira Airport to ensure passengers receive the necessary assistance and compensation.
