Survey Reveals Mixed Feelings Among Residents About Tourism in Madeira
A recent statistical study conducted by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has revealed that a significant majority of residents believe the current flow of tourists to the region is excessive. Despite these concerns, the general sentiment toward tourism remains largely positive.
With regard to tourist spending in the Region, 56.9% of residents consider that they spend "neither too much nor too little", 24.5% believe that they spend "little" and 9.1% consider that they "spend a lot".
92% Consider Tourist Numbers "High" or "Very High"
According to the findings of the Residents' Survey on Tourism in Madeira (IRTM), 92% of Madeirans aged 18 and older believe the number of tourists is either "high" or "very high". Specifically, 53.9% categorized the tourist influx as "very high," while 37.9% rated it as "high." Only 7.7% of respondents considered the flow of tourists to be "moderate."
Tourists' Presence Does Not Significantly Disrupt Daily Life
Although many Madeirans frequently encounter tourists, the majority do not feel their daily lives are significantly disrupted. The survey found that 42.7% of respondents reported encountering tourists occasionally, and 40.1% reported frequent interactions. Nevertheless, only 6.3% stated that these encounters were disruptive. Additionally, 92.2% of residents said they did not need to alter their daily habits to avoid tourists.
Tourists' behavior, in general, is respectful and pleasant, 94.1% and 97.4% of residents considered it so, respectively.
Respectful Behavior From Tourists Earns High Approval
The behavior of tourists in Madeira was generally well-regarded. An overwhelming 94.1% of residents described tourists as "respectful," and 97.4% found them to be "pleasant." The data also revealed that interactions between residents and tourists were not extensive, with 53.4% of residents reporting rare interaction, while 24% engaged with tourists almost daily.
These data are not only extremely useful but also extremely positive for the destination. Above all, it is a scientifically-based study, using properly structured surveys conducted by an accredited entity for this purpose. Therefore, it should be taken seriously and should counter all the opinions - mere unfounded opinions that circulate and may not reflect the findings of this survey.
