Detained Mayor of Funchal Will be Transferred to Lisbon Courthouse

Pedro Calado Cooperating But Sent To The Mainland

This afternoon, Pedro Calado, the president of the Funchal City Council, was taken to the Funchal Prison facilities. He has provided all necessary clarifications related to the ongoing investigation but will remain in custody until he is heard by the investigating judge overseeing the case. This afternoon, Calado arrived in Cancela. He was then sent to the transition zone of the Prison Establishment and is expected to be transferred to the courthouse of the District of Lisbon tomorrow via a plane of the Portuguese Air Force.

Pedro Calado is Not The Only Detained

Two other businessmen, Avelino Farinha (AFA Business Group) and CustĂłdio Correia (Sociocorreia), are also under investigation in connection with this case. In the meantime, Miguel Albuquerque, who benefits from political immunity, was praising Pedro Calado, after searches of his private facilities by the police had occurred. Albuquerque further expressed full cooperation and willingness to assist the judicial authorities throughout the process.

In a recent large-scale operation carried out by the Judicial Police and the Public Ministry, authorities conducted searches at over a hundred locations across Portugal, including numerous sites in Madeira. This operation is part of a broader inquiry that focuses on several high-ranking public and political office holders in the region of Madeira. The Public Ministry is specifically investigating Pedro Calado for a suspected corruptive pact with the AFA business group, owners of the Savoy hotels. The alleged pact revolves around the favoring of the business group through municipal licensing approvals in exchange for compensation. It is noteworthy that Pedro Calado had previously been employed by the AFA business group before entering into politics.
