Rising Rental Prices Surprise Remote Workers
As recently reported by RTP Madeira, digital nomads who choose Madeira for its warm climate and scenic landscapes are increasingly expressing frustration over the high cost of housing. Many arrive expecting an affordable stay but are met with rental prices that are higher than anticipated.
A Popular Destination with Growing Challenges
Madeira has long been a favored location for remote workers, attracting professionals from various countries. While coworking spaces provide convenient and cost-effective working environments, the rising cost of living - particularly in housing - has become a major concern for those who plan to stay for extended periods.
They just bring their laptops, and we take care of everything else. Around 80% of our clients are digital nomads, mostly between 25 and 44 years old. They usually stay in Madeira for about three months and mainly come from Germany, the UK, the US, and Italy.

Housing Affordability Varies by Nationality
For many international digital nomads, especially those from wealthier economies like the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, Madeira's rental prices may still seem reasonable. However, for locals and those coming from countries with lower wages, the costs can be prohibitively high.
Some Remote Workers Are Looking for Alternative Destinations
As housing costs continue to rise, some digital nomads who initially planned to settle in Madeira have started exploring more affordable destinations. Despite this challenge, the island remains home to a vibrant remote work community, currently hosting around 60 permanent digital nomad members.
