Funchal Introduces Electronic Locks On Waste Disposal Containers

Funchal installs electronic locks on waste bins, empowering residents while collecting data for informed waste management decisions and sustainability.

Electronic Locks For Residents Without Door-To-Door Waste Collection

In response to the issue of improper waste disposal, Funchal city has introduced electronic locks on waste bins. This move, led by the Environmental Department, aims to give residents who don't have door-to-door waste collection, their own exclusive bin access.

Promoting Responsible Waste Management

The plan is to start with three bins fitted with electronic locks, allowing only residents to use them with special magnetic cards (Cartão de separação). This helps prevent others from dumping waste improperly, which often leads to messy piles and overfilled bins. It's a way to make people more responsible for their waste disposal habits.

7000 Euros For 12 Locks, Serving 30 Households

The chosen lock system is adaptable to different bins and cuts down on maintenance costs. The city invested over 7,000 euros in getting 12 locks, along with cards and software. These new bins will be placed in specific areas like Travessa das Voltas, Caminho da Fé, and Travessa da Casa Velha, serving around 30 households. The goal is to improve waste management and encourage responsible disposal habits among residents.

Waste Disposal Monitoring

Additionally, the electronic locks will allow the Environmental Department to keep track of bin usage through a management platform. This will help them make informed decisions and address any issues with waste disposal promptly.

Electronic Locks To Be Introduced Elsewhere

Depending on how well this pilot project goes, the city may expand the electronic lock system to other waste disposal sites where improper dumping is a problem. By taking these steps and involving the community, Funchal aims to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment for everyone.
