The First Ever Encuentro de Tango Argentino in Madeira

Care about Tango? The Association Solo Tango is scheduling a 3-day event in June with more dates to follow. Relive the Golden Age of Argentine Tango!

Association Solo Tango Invites For A 3 Day Event in June

The Association Solo Tango, headed by Isabel Halliday (originally from Madeira) and Alain Gely (France) is organizing the first-ever Encuentro de Tango Argentino in Madeira, from Friday, June 14 until Sunday, June 16. The event lasts for 3 days and takes place every afternoon and evening until 01.30 am. This will be one of more events with the upcoming date yet to be scheduled. Dancers from many European countries will grace the dance floor of one of the four-star hotels in Funchal.

Encuentros: Tradition From The Golden Age Of Tango

Encuentros are private events where parity is paramount and the old traditions of social dancing in Buenos Aires ‘milongas’ are respected: ladies sit on one side of the room and men on the other. There is no spoken invitation to dance, just a ‘cabeceo’ initiated by the man and accepted (or discreetly rejected) by the lady. Couples then dance in a circle formation (called a ronda) and observe great respect for their fellow dancers. Most importantly, the tangos played are from the Golden Age of Tango (1930s-1945) and international tango Djs delight the participants with their music selection over the 3 days of dancing.

Event To Take Place At The Views Monumental In Funchal

The event is held in the Sala Joao Carlos Abreu in the Hotel The Views Monumental in Funchal. For the benefit of all participants and to ensure that the level of the dancers and their quality as the ‘milongueros’ is guaranteed, mandatory registration and acceptance by the event holders are required.

Isabel & Alain

More Tango Also Beyond Madeira

Isabel and Alain are dance teachers in France but also organize other Encuentros both in France and Spain. This first event in Madeira is hopefully the first of many since the Encuentros are then repeated every year, benefiting local businesses.

Being Madeirense, Isabel has big hopes for future tango events in Madeira. Interested? Further information can be found on their Facebook page Encuentro La Isla Bonita or by email at solotangofr@gmail.com.
