First New Iveco Buses Deployed In Madeira

The arrival of the first of the 106 new buses in Madeira marks a significant step in modernizing public transit. Will it also contribute to improving public transportation as a more widely used mode of transportation?

New Buses For Public Transportation In Madeira

The first of the 106 new buses promised for the renewal of public transportation in Madeira has officially arrived on the island. Manufactured by the European Provider Iveco Bus and reported by Diário de Notícias Madeira, these buses will be deployed by Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira S.A (CAM) and Rodoeste, reinforcing public transportation measures in Madeira.

Iveco Bus previously announced a deal in September of last year, as part of the “Concession for the public service of road passenger transport in the Autonomous Region of Madeira”.

The agreement signed covers the supply of a total of 106 Iveco Crossway and Evadys vehicles, both 10 and 12 meters long, equipped with the reliable 400 hp Cursor 9 engine developed by FPT Industrial with its patented HI-SCR technology. They also include inside all the amenities and the latest safety equipment to provide passengers with a safe and comfortable journey.

Madeira’s Public Transportation Momentum

With the arrival of the first bus, there's notable progress in the fleet modernization effort in Madeira, especially considering the pressing need for replacements of older vehicles. This step forward holds promise for improving service quality for commuters across the island. Coupled with the recent implementation of free public transport for seniors and young residents in January, it's evident that a positive momentum is building in the right direction.

Modernizing Public Transportation In Madeira, A Pressing Question

However, some of the main issues of public transportation rests elsewhere, especially regarding the exploding number of rental car companies and the pressing question of how to sustainably accommodate even more tourists every other year. The full extent of the new buses' contribution to enhancing Madeira's public transport system and making it more easily accessible, also for tourists, remains to be seen.
