Police Recover Over €3,000 in Stolen Goods

The Madeira police have apprehended a foreign couple involved in a string of thefts across several shops in Funchal, recovering more than €3,000 worth of stolen goods. The couple was intercepted just as they were trying to flee the island.

Stolen goods of foreign couple

The investigation started two days ago on September 25, when a store in Fórum Madeira mall reported the theft of 14 high-end perfumes, valued at around €2,000. Security footage helped police gather information from local citizens, hotels, and rental car agencies, eventually leading them to the couple’s hotel in Funchal.

After reviewing the footage from the establishment in question, officers from the Funchal Police Division conducted inquiries with various citizens, hotels, and car rental agencies, gathering relevant information that led to the location of the suspects at a hotel in the Funchal area.

Attempt to Escape to Airport Thwarted

The next day, on September 26, police staked out the hotel and stopped the couple as they were about to leave for the airport. The stolen perfumes were recovered, and officers also found other stolen goods from various shops in the mall, still tagged and with security sensors attached.

Tools Point to Premeditation

In addition to the stolen merchandise, the police seized tools used to remove security alarms from the items, suggesting that the thefts were premeditated. The suspects have been charged and are now under investigation by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, with travel restrictions in place while the case proceeds.
