Madeira's Maritime Growth: Ship Registrations Multiply

The number of ships registered in Madeira multiplied within the last ten years, while the Funchal port expansion will be reassessed.

Almost 1000 Vessels Registered In Madeira

The Madeira's International Shipping Register (MAR) has witnessed a remarkable surge in recent years. The number of registered vessels has skyrocketed, growing from less than 250 in 2014 to almost 1000 today, thus quadrupling in size. MAR thus ranks second in Portugal but is a top-three contender within the entire EU, both in terms of vessel count and total tonnage.

Planned Expansion of Funchal Port Will Be Reassessed

President Albuquerque, while addressing the ECASBA Annual Seminar at the Port of Funchal Gare Marítima, also commented on the planned expansion of the 'Pontinha' area. He acknowledged the need for future growth of the Port of Funchal but emphasized that the expansion project will be reassessed after the completion of the new hospital in Funchal. This suggests that the port's expansion might occur during a future administration.
