€1.3 Million Fireworks Light Up Madeira for New Year's Eve

Funchal is making a big investment in this year's New Year's Eve fireworks, but topping last year's spectacular display, which left a lasting impression on many, will be a tough challenge.

Major Investment for Festive Celebrations

Madeira is investing a total of €4.1 million into this year’s Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. This includes the highly anticipated fireworks display, the festive lights, and a variety of cultural events that will take place throughout the holiday season. The government hopes the program will attract thousands of visitors to the island, boosting tourism during the holiday period.

New Year's Eve Fireworks to Cost €1.3 Million

A significant portion of the investment is earmarked for the New Year’s Eve fireworks display, which will cost an impressive €1.3 million. Set to begin at midnight on December 31st, the eight-minute show will be fired from 59 launch sites around the capital, Funchal. This year’s theme will highlight the traditional blue-and-white tiles ("azulejos") of Madeira, with new pyrotechnic effects being introduced for an even more breathtaking spectacle.

Christmas Market and Festivities in Funchal

The Christmas Market in Funchal’s Avenida Arriaga opens this Sunday and runs until January 7th. Visitors can enjoy holiday stalls, local crafts, and seasonal food. Festive lights will decorate the city’s streets, churches, monuments, and gardens, creating a magical atmosphere. The lights will be on from 18:00 to 01:00, with longer hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

High Hotel Occupancy Expected for the Holidays

Tourism officials predict strong demand for accommodation over the festive season, with hotel occupancy projected to reach 88% during the New Year’s period. This surge in visitors is expected to provide a significant boost to the local economy, especially considering the large number of events and attractions lined up for both Christmas and New Year's Eve.
