MSC Euribia Drops Anchor in Funchal
Today in Funchal: the most efficient cruise ship in the world - meet the MSC Euribia! The cruise ship runs under the Maltese flag and was built in Poland. Construction of the cruise ship was finished in 2022 and it was commissioned in June 2023. It is 332 meters long and designed for up to almost 6000 passengers. The MSC Euribia runs on a diesel-electric engine that can also run on LNG (liquified gas), which is one of the main reasons why it advertises itself as being very efficient.
The global cruise market size was valued at USD 7.67 billion in 2022 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) 11.5% from 2023 to 2030.

Why Does MSC Euribia Proudly Advertise Its Efficiency?
Besides the fact that the Engine of the MSC Euribia can run on LNG gas, which is by definition ‘greener‘ than heavy oil or diesel engines. More reasons mentioned by the provider MSC are_
Environmental Stewardship: it runs an advanced onboard wastewater treatment system. Every drop of wastewater undergoes thorough treatment, ensuring it meets stringent cleanliness standards before leaving the ship.
Waste Management: The ship prioritizes waste reduction through meticulous sorting. This approach helps segregate materials for recycling, aligning with eco-friendly practices.
Energy Efficiency: It combines smart technologies and thus optimizes energy usage with intelligent heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems.
LED Lighting: The ship employs energy-efficient LED lighting controlled by smart management systems. This not only enhances onboard ambiance but also aligns with the vessel's commitment to reducing energy consumption.
Automatic Data Collection Systems: Through collaboration with the shipyard, the MSC Euribia is equipped with state-of-the-art automatic data collection systems. These systems enable remote energy monitoring and advanced analysis, facilitating real-time shoreside support to optimize operational efficiency.
Are Cruise Ships on LNG Are Eco-Friendly?
Short answer: Not at all. The Cruise Ship industry is booming despite being the worst CO2 polluter of the entire tourism sector. Cruise ships using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) are seen as better for the environment because they produce fewer harmful emissions. However, there are no real reasons for calling them eco-friendly. Cruise ships on LNG only have about 20% less carbon emissions than conventional cruise ships. A conventional cruise ship like the Queen Mary 2 emits almost twice as much CO2 per passenger mile than a long-haul flight.
Producing and moving LNG can be harmful to the environment. The main component, methane, is a strong greenhouse gas, and getting it can cause leaks and emissions. Also, turning it into LNG needs a lot of energy, often from fossil fuels, which kind of cancels out the eco benefits. The carbon intensity of liquefied gas can vary based on its source. For instance, transporting liquefied gas by ship instead of a pipeline can tenfold carbon emissions. Then, even if the ships use LNG, they still emit carbon dioxide, although less than regular fuels.
Lastly, focusing only on LNG might stop us from looking at even greener options, like electric power or renewable energy. In short, while LNG somehow helps, saying it's the green solution ignores the whole picture and it advertises an industry that is not eco-friendly at all. We need to look at everything involved, not just the emissions when the ship is running.
