Festivities Begin November 25 with a Concert at Mercado dos Lavradores
Funchal is gearing up for a festive 2024 Christmas season, with a lineup of 11 Christmas events starting on November 25. The celebrations will open with a special concert at Mercado dos Lavradores at 17:30h, featuring the Orquestra Sissi and a group of dancers. Mayor Cristina Pedra explained that the choice of Mercado dos Lavradores was no accident. The market is celebrating its anniversary on the same day, making it the perfect location to begin the season’s festivities.
Local Artisans at "Natal na Praça"
Supporting local culture is a key part of Funchal’s Christmas plans. On three Sundays in December 1st, 8th, and 15th - local artisans will showcase their work at Mercado dos Lavradores as part of the Natal na Praça event. Visitors can explore a range of handmade products while connecting with the talented artisans behind them.
New Attractions at Aldeia Natal
One of the biggest attractions this year will be Aldeia Natal, the Christmas village at Praça do MunicĂpio, opening on November 29. This year’s village will feature a traditional French carousel and, for the first time, a wheelchair-accessible train to ensure all visitors can enjoy the event. The village is designed to be a place where families of all ages can gather for fun activities, music, storytelling, and treats like popcorn and cotton candy.
Ice Skating and Theatre Bring Extra Festivities
The Ice Rink at Jardim do Almirante Reis, always a holiday favorite, returns on November 30 with natural ice once again. It’s a chance for people of all ages to enjoy a real winter experience in the heart of Funchal. For those looking for more entertainment, the Municipal Theatre Baltazar Dias will host the Christmas play A MissĂŁo ImpossĂvel de Nicolau, beginning December 19. The theatre will also showcase Mesas de Natal Bordal, a display of beautifully decorated Christmas tables, from December 12 to January 5.
Traditions and New Year’s Eve Celebrations
Funchal’s Noite do Mercado, a beloved event that fills the streets with light and energy, will once again take over the city center. It’s a night known for its vibrant atmosphere, and this year, local businesses will have an opportunity to shine alongside the fun. To ring in the New Year, the city will host celebrations at Parque de Santa Catarina on December 31.
