Government Reviews Measures Amid Traffic Chaos

The Regional Government of Madeira is contemplating the potential closure of access to Pico do Arieiro, one of the island's most popular tourist destinations. Eduardo Jesus, the Secretary of Economy, Tourism, and Culture, indicated on Tuesday that there are ongoing discussions about this measure as a means to address the daily congestion and disorganized parking experienced at the site.

There is reflection on this matter and there are ideas to implement that go in this direction (…) There are several measures that are being thought about and that will solve the problem

Bus Shuttle Service Launch Under Scrutiny

Following the recent launch of a shuttle service operated by Horários do Funchal to Pico do Arieiro, Jesus remarked that it is too early to assess the effectiveness of this new transportation option. Despite high hopes, initial demand for the service has not met expectations. "Evaluating after just one day is premature," he stated, suggesting that more time is needed to gauge its impact. The shuttle bus had previously been criticized for not solving the problem, causing more traffic and endangering tourism companies.

Restricting Access To Pico Do Arieiro May Become Necessary

Eduardo Jesus further discussed the various measures being considered to alleviate the traffic issues at Pico do Arieiro. He emphasized that several solutions are in development, although implementation has been delayed due to the Regional Government's previous management challenges. While the secretary remains optimistic about the shuttle service, it seems increasingly likely that restricting access to the peak may become necessary if conditions do not improve substantially.
