Uber's attempt to re-enter Madeira's TVDE market has been denied, leaving Bolt and Rumus as the island's active ride-hailing platforms.

TVDE: Uber Wants Back In

Funchal, Madeira - The international ride-hailing company Uber has been denied to operate within Madeira’s TVDE market (individual passenger transport in de-characterized vehicles based on electronic platforms) market by the Regional Government. According to Rui Gonçalves, Regional Director of Mobility and Land Transport. This decision comes as Uber sought to re-enter the Madeira market, having previously operated on the island.

Bolt And Rumus Operate In Madeira

The rejection of Uber's application leaves Madeira with two active ride-hailing platforms: Bolt and Rumus. The regional government's decision was based on Uber's failure to meet the necessary requirements for operation. The news highlights the government's commitment to regulating the TVDE sector on the island, with Miguel Albuquerque declaring he does not want them on the island.

Constitutional Court Declared Vehicle Cap Unconstitutional

This development follows a landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court on February 23, which eliminated the cap on the number of vehicles that can operate as ride-hailing services without being classified as traditional taxis. Since this ruling, there has been a surge in both the number of licenses issued and the number of requests for authorization from both operators and drivers.
