Salaries Increased By 6,6% On Average
In the first quarter of 2024, the average monthly salary in the Autonomous Region of Madeira increased by 6.6% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,375 euros. This increase was observed in both regular (6.4%) and base (6.7%) remuneration. Data from the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira indicate that while salaries in Madeira grew less at the base level, there was a notable increase in the gross and regular remuneration of workers.
Salary 68 Euros Lower Than On The Mainland
Sectors such as 'Other service activities', 'Human health and social work activities', the public sector, and companies across various segments recorded significant increases in total salary, surpassing the overall growth average. In comparison to national data, the average total monthly gross salary per worker in Madeira was 68 euros lower than in Portugal where the average salary amounts to 1,443 euros.
Low Salaries Remain A Problem In Madeira
The lower average salary in Madeira compared to mainland Portugal presents a challenge for residents, who struggle to keep up with housing costs, groceries, and other essential expenses. Additionally, lower salaries limit opportunities for professional development or pursuing higher education due to financial constraints. Low salaries are a problem when it comes to retaining skilled workers in Madeira, impacting the island's economic growth and development.
