July 1st Is Madeira Day

Today, July 1st, marks a momentous occasion for the people of Madeira as they celebrate Madeira Day, a public holiday commemorating the autonomy granted to the archipelago by Portugal in 1976. This day also celebrates the historical discovery of Madeira on July 1st, 1419, by Portuguese explorers João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira.
