The Madeira Regional Government is actively engaged in negotiations with the Central Government and Vinci/ANA to alleviate the anticipated rise in high airport charges, unhealthy for Madeira.
Eduardo Jesus, the regional secretary of Tourism and Culture, emphasized on Tuesday, November 28, that the Madeiran executive is exerting considerable efforts to counteract the upward trajectory of airport charges that has been observed in recent years.
Expressing concern, Eduardo Jesus highlighted that it is not conducive for Madeira to contend with elevated airport rates. He also criticized the concession model implemented by the Republic's Government, asserting that it has failed to adhere to the agreement stipulating that Madeira International Airport - Cristiano Ronaldo should benefit from lower rates compared to airports in the national territory.
Reduction in Ryanair's operations
Additionally, the Regional Government is actively in conversation with various airlines operating in the region, aiming to fortify international routes as a strategic measure to address the reduction in Ryanair's operations scheduled from January.
These remarks were made on the sidelines of the opening of the XVI Annual Tourism Conference, held today at the Madeira Congress Center.
