Eduardo Jesus Dismisses Criticism
The controversy surrounding a dance performance at the Lisbon Tourism Exchange (BTL) has been dismissed by Madeira’s Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, as "hysteria" and "alarmism." The performance, a fusion of traditional Madeiran folklore with contemporary dance, was meant as a tribute to Madeira’s florists and not a representation of folklore. Jesus emphasized that the act was a creative way to honor Madeiran identity while maintaining respect for tradition.

Fusion of Traditional and Modern Dance
He argued that cultural expressions must evolve and highlighted that this fusion of traditional and modern dance has been successfully showcased since 2022 at various tourism events. According to him, the performance was well received and helped modernize Madeira’s cultural image without undermining its authenticity.
Honestly, I don't agree that our traditional attire is being so trivialized. The Madeiran attire is used in folklore, not in this type of dance. They wear the hood, the vest, the boots, and a mini skirt, to be honest. If they want to modernize, fine, but they shouldn't abuse the attire used in Madeiran folklore.

Diaspora Claims Disrespect and Inappropriate Clothing
Critics, including members of the Madeiran diaspora, claim the performance disrespected the region’s cultural heritage, particularly due to the alleged inappropriate use of traditional attire. A letter circulating on social media condemns the act as a distortion of Madeiran folklore, calling for greater responsibility in cultural promotions.
