Transporting Grape-Filled Crates via Levadas
In a clever display of ingenuity, Madeira winemakers are once again turning to the island's historic irrigation system to streamline the annual grape harvest. This age-old technique, which involves using the gentle flow of water in the levadas to transport goods, has been given a modern twist.

Juan Teixeira, Director General of Justino’s Madeira Wines SA, recently shared a video on his personal Facebook page demonstrating this time-honored practice. In the video, crates filled halfway with freshly picked grapes are carefully placed in the Levada do Norte. As the water gently carries these crates along, it effectively eliminates the need for manual labor over long distances. Watch the video:
