Inquiry Finds No Evidence of Crime
The Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP) has closed the investigation into Eduardo Jesus, the former Regional Secretary for Tourism, citing a lack of evidence and no criminal activity. The inquiry, which became public in November last year, played a key role in the fall of the Regional Government. Sources close to the case confirmed the decision to Diário, a local newspaper.
Eduardo Jesus No Longer Under Investigation
Eduardo Jesus confirmed this morning that he had been informed of the case’s closure. With this decision, he is no longer considered a suspect. The same applies to Dorita Mendonça, the former Regional Director of Tourism, who had also been under investigation. Both officials had been accused of misconduct in public office following an anonymous complaint.
Allegations of Conflict of Interest Dismissed
The inquiry focused on a decision by the Tourism Secretariat to grant tourist utility status to Quinta do Furão, a resort in Santana. The complaint alleged a conflict of interest because the Director of Tourism, Dorita Mendonça, was married to the hotel’s director, Pedro Milheiro da Costa. Additionally, Eduardo Jesus is the brother of one of the resort’s managers, Sérgio Jesus. The investigation did not find sufficient grounds to support these claims.
Political Impact and Reactions
The inquiry’s public disclosure last November contributed to political turmoil, ultimately leading to the collapse of the Regional Government. Now, with the case officially closed, questions remain about the consequences of the investigation and whether political figures affected by it will seek to return to public office. Neither Eduardo Jesus nor Dorita Mendonça has commented on any future political plans.
