Santo Amaro Festival Culminating in Destroyed Stage
Funchal Noticias reports that the stage of the Santo Amaro Festival has been destroyed. A picture posted online shows the devastated stage that succumbed to the storm as wind temperatures of more than 120 km/h hit the region around the airport at night. This year's festival faced unfortunate circumstances, as persistent rainfall impaired the celebration, culminating in Irene destroying the stage. As the festival was over at the time of the incident, no one has been reported injured.
Santo Amaro Ends The Christmas Season
The Santo Amaro Fest is held in honor of Santo Amaro, who was the patron saint of the sea, the fishermen of Santa Cruz used to pray to him when the fish were scarce and when there were storms. Likewise, whenever there were floods in the streams, the town's residents also turned to the saint. The festival lasted from the 12th to 15th of January and featured various artists, food and drink stalls, and lots of entertainment. It’s the first festival of the year on Madeira Island and officially ends the Christmas season.
