Trail Closure Scheduled for April 16, 17 and 19
One of the most famous levada walks, the Levada das 25 Fontes (PR 6) will be partly closed next week due to safety work by the local electricity company. The interruption will happen on three days: Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday — April 16, 17, and 19.
The reason for the closure is the cleaning of a hillside near the water channel, where a landslide recently occurred. The Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira (EEM) will carry out the work to make the area safe again.
Alternative Route to Operate in Both Directions
Normally, part of the hiking trail is only accessible in one direction. However, during the closure, hikers will be asked to use an alternative route (detour) - which will temporarily allow people to walk in both directions. This change will help maintain access to the trail, even though part of it will be closed.
Due to the risk to people, this section of the trail must be closed while the cleaning work is happening
Hikers Queue on Levada das 25 Fontes
The Levada das 25 Fontes is one of Madeira’s most visited trails. In recent months, the number of visitors to the Levada das 25 Fontes has grown a lot. On some days, instead of a quiet walk in nature, hikers are met with long lines and crowded paths.
Unfortunately, there were too many visitors. The trail itself is very beautiful (once you get past the first part along the paved road), and people spread out a bit along the way. However, at the end of the Levada, the “25 Fontes,” it was extremely crowded.

Work Was Originally Planned for This Weekend
The safety work was supposed to take place from April 11 to 13, but it was delayed for several reasons. Officials did not give details about the cause of the delay, but confirmed the new dates for the work next week. The trail is expected to return to normal conditions after April 19.
