History and Tradition

Founded in 1886 by Jacintho Figueira de Sousa, Livraria Esperança (Esperança Bookstore) is a cultural landmark in Funchal, Madeira Island. More than just a bookstore, Livraria Esperança is a historical space that preserves the tradition of bookselling and contributes to the dissemination of culture and knowledge. It was the first commercial establishment in Madeira to sell books and was at some point considered the second-largest bookstore in the world. Today, it offers a wide variety of, approximately 100.000 books in over 20 rooms and on several floors.

The idea of opening Livraria Esperança was due to the fact that some traders had also started to “sell books”, but mixed with other goods, which outraged Mr. Jacinto. That's why Livraria Esperança, since 1886 to this day, ONLY SELLS BOOKS. Because the bookstore's traffic was very low, it had no employees, and a glass door was set up, with springs, which made a bell ring when a Customer entered, and Mr. Jacinto himself came to answer them.

Livraria Esperança

More Than Just a Bookstore

Livraria Esperança is not your average bookstore, it is special. Visiting Livraria Esperança is like traveling through time. Do not expect to find the latest books here, it’s nothing like Fnac or any of these new-age bookstores that cater to the new age. Instead, immerse yourself in a world steeped in tradition and history, where every corner whispers stories of the past and every book has a tale to tell. Each book is typically displayed only once, prominently laid flat with the cover facing the customer.

According to their website, the bookstore believes this is "the best way to publicize the book." Livraria Esperança also promotes cultural activities, such as book launches, literary discussions, and art exhibitions. The Livraria Esperança Foundation, created in 1991, carries out important work to encourage reading among children and young people in Madeira.
