About The Lobo Marinho In Madeira

The Mediterranean monk seal, also known as the sea lion, has returned to Madeira's coast, marking a significant conservation success. Historically abundant, these seals faced near extinction due to hunting and accidental capture. The Regional Government of Madeira, recognizing the species' plight, designated the Desertas Islands as a protected area in 1990 and launched monitoring and conservation programs, including exclusion zones and public awareness campaigns. These efforts have led to a notable increase in the seal population, with more frequent sightings and interactions with humans.
