Madeira Airport To Install Wind Measurement Radars In September

Madeira Airport is about to install wind measurement radars to improve safety and review presumably outdated wind limits, costing 4.5 million euros.

Wind Measurement Radars Coming To Madeira

Madeira International Airport will install wind measurement radars in September, costing 4.5 million euros, as announced by the Regional Secretary of Economy, Tourism, and Culture, Eduardo Jesus. These radars, acquired by NAV Portugal, aim to improve the airport's safety and operational efficiency.

Radar Will Allow To Reconsider Mandatory Wind Limits

The radars aim to enhance airport operations, as Madeira uniquely enforces mandatory wind limits of 15 knots, established in 1964 based on WWII-era aircraft studies. At that time, the runway was only 1,600 meters long, compared to the current length of 2,781 meters. This extension has not been considered in the wind limits. The National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) plans to review these limits by 2026, following the testing of the new radars.
