Steady Growth in Passenger and Aircraft Movements
In July 2024, passenger traffic at the two airports in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM) saw year-on-year growth of 4.0%, according to data provided by ANA - Aeroportos de Portugal to Madeira's Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM). During the month of July, 490,500 passengers were transported on 3,284 commercial flights, representing increases of 4.0% in passengers and 2.6% in aircraft movements compared to July 2023.
Each aircraft (considering both those that landed and took off) carried an average of about 153 passengers (152 in July 2023).
Increase in International Traffic, Slight Dip in Domestic
The growth in passenger numbers was driven largely by international traffic, which saw an 8.7% increase. However, domestic traffic experienced a slight decline, dropping by 1.1%. At Madeira's main airport, international traffic accounted for 56.2% of the total, with domestic flights making up the remaining 43.8%. Conversely, at Porto Santo Airport, domestic flights dominated, representing 83.9% of the total, though this was a smaller proportion than the previous month.
Madeira Sees Higher Occupancy Rate
The average occupancy rate of aircraft across Madeira's airports reached 90.4% in July 2024, up from 89.3% in July 2023. Madeira Airport achieved a 90.9% occupancy rate, while Porto Santo Airport reached 83.6%, both reflecting further improvements compared to the same period last year, when occupancy stood at 90.2% and 80.0%, respectively.
According to the International Air Transport Association, the worldwide load factor for the passenger airline industry during 2015 was 79.7%.

UK Passengers Lead International Traffic, Followed by Germany
From January to July 2024, passenger traffic across Madeira’s airports rose by 4.2%, with nearly 2.9 million passengers passing through. Of this total, 52.6% was international traffic, with the United Kingdom accounting for the largest share at 29.0%, followed by Germany (20.3%) and France (8.9%). Domestic flights, including internal connections within Portugal, represented 47.4% of total passenger movement during this period.
