About 100 People Celebrate Ukraine In Funchal

Around a hundred Madeirans and Ukrainians took to the streets of Madeira on Saturday, August 24, to commemorate Ukraine’s 33rd Independence Day. The event, organized by the Ucrânia com Amor  Association, began at the Almirante Reis cable car station and concluded at the Municipal Garden of Funchal.

Regional Secretary of Inclusion Joins Demonstration

Ana Sousa, Madeira’s Regional Secretary of Inclusion, Labor, and Youth, participated in the march, representing the President of the Regional Government. Sousa’s presence was seen as a significant gesture of support for Ukrainians facing ongoing challenges due to the Russian invasion.

Government Assistance to Ukrainian Refugees Highlighted

Speaking at the Municipal Garden, Ana Sousa expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people and emphasized the various forms of assistance the Regional Government has provided to refugees seeking safety in Madeira. “Since the arrival of the first Ukrainians to the Region, a range of support measures have been promptly implemented,” Sousa stated. These measures have been crucial in providing refuge, integration, and support to those displaced by the conflict.

Solidarity and Commitment to Peace

Concluding her speech, Sousa reaffirmed Madeira’s commitment to supporting those who have fled their homeland in search of peace. “Today and always, we must stand by those who have had to leave their country to find peace,” she said, underscoring the island's longstanding tradition of hospitality.
