Yes To Marriage! Madeira Counts Fewer Divorces

We live in fast-paced times where commitment can be challenging, yet the latest statistics reveal a decline in the divorce rate in Madeira.

Divorce Numbers Drop in 2023

In 2023, Madeira saw a decrease in divorces, with 520 cases recorded, down 33 from the previous year. The crude divorce rate dropped to 2.0‰ from 2.2‰ in 2022, according to the Regional Directorate of Statistics.

Câmara de Lobos Has Lowest Divorce Rate, Porto Moniz the Highest

Câmara de Lobos had the lowest divorce rate in the region at 1.6‰, while Porto Moniz had the highest at 3.2‰. Most divorces were between opposite-sex couples, with just two divorces involving same-sex male couples.

Most Divorces by Mutual Agreement

About 72.5% of divorces in Madeira 2023 were by mutual consent, while 27.5% were filed without one partner’s agreement. The average age at divorce increased slightly to 49 years for men and 46.6 years for women.

Long Marriages Account for Most Divorces

Nearly half of the divorces in 2023 involved marriages lasting 20 years or more, with 45.8% of cases falling into this category. Additionally, 28 divorces involved marriages that lasted less than a year.
