Crime In Madeira Reaches Nine-Year High

The number of reported crimes in Madeira soared to a nine-year high in 2023, mirroring trends seen across the mainland.

7100 Reported Crimes in 2023

According to the Direção-Geral de Política de Justiça, Madeira witnessed a significant increase in reported crimes in 2023, reaching its highest level in nine years. With over 7100 reported crimes, marking a 5% rise compared to the previous year, the island faced an average of almost 20 reported crimes per day.

Crimes Against Property Make Up 38%

Of particular note, crimes against property accounted for 38% of the total reported incidents Additionally, approximately 850 incidents related to domestic violence (8.4%) were reported to authorities, including nine cases involving minors.

Reported Animal Cruelty At A 10 Year Low

Conversely, reports of animal cruelty were at their lowest in the last decade, with around 30 complaints filed in 2023.

Recent announcements indicate that Portugal's crime rate for 2023 surged to a 10-year high, with an 8% increase compared to 2022. A total of 371,995 incidents were reported. Nevertheless, Portugal remains one of the most peaceful countries in the world, ranking on 7th place of the Global Peace Index. Only Iceland, Denmark, Ireland, New Yealand, Austria and Singapore are considered more peaceful
