Competing Against Global Favorites
Madeira stood out in a field of strong contenders, which included destinations like Baku, Mallorca, Maremma, Mie, Miyazaki, Sicily, or Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah Economic City. The award reflects a widespread acknowledgment of the island’s increasing importance in the golf world.
Unique Courses Set in Natural Beauty
Three distinct golf courses in Madeira have helped establish its place on the international stage:
Santo da Serra Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., features 27 holes surrounded by spectacular natural scenery. Its peaceful setting makes it an ideal place to enjoy the game away from daily stresses.
Palheiro Golf, an 18-hole, par-72 championship course, winds through forests of pine and lush botanical gardens at an elevation of nearly 500 meters. The course offers players striking views of Madeira’s mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
Porto Santo Golf, situated on the island of Porto Santo, is an 18-hole course designed by Seve Ballesteros. It combines technical challenges with stunning backdrops, including coastal cliffs, rolling hills, and the ocean.
Golf Course | Holes | Par | Notable Features |
27 | 72 | Stunning mountain and ocean views, European Tour event venue.
18 | 72 | Set on a historic estate with sweeping views of Funchal Bay.
18 | 72 | Coastal cliffs, varied layouts, signature par-3 13th hole. |
Golf Passport Adds to the Island’s Appeal
