Madeira Experiences Sharp Decline in Violent Crimes

While serious and violent crimes are decreasing, Madeira sees a higher overall crime rate and an increase in domestic violence.

While Crime Rate Soars, Violent Crimes Are On The Retreat

In Madeira, the overall crime rate increased in 2023, but there was a significant decrease in violent and serious crimes, one of the biggest declines in the country. Madeira saw a 17.8% decrease in violent and serious crime. As for Portugal, while violent and serious crime increased in certain areas like Guarda (68,3%) or Bragança (54,3%), it also dropped in Castelo Branco, Santarém, and Leiria.

Domestic Violence In Madeira Increases, Defying National Trend

Despite this decrease in violent crime, domestic violence cases increased slightly in Madeira. There were 36 more cases registered in 2023 than in the previous year, totaling 851 cases. In most of these cases, the victim was a spouse or similar. This increase in domestic violence occurred despite a general downward trend across the country. Nationally, there was a slight decrease of 0.1% in domestic violence cases, but Madeira bucked this trend with a 4.4% increase.
