Ticket Sales and Revenue Show Steady Growth

While more people are using buses and other transport systems, ticket sales have grown at a slower rate. For example, Madeira’s cable car systems recorded a 4.9% rise in ticket sales during the same nine-month period, generating €13.6 million in revenue - a 4.7% increase from 2023. However, growth was more modest in the third quarter of 2024, with ticket sales up by 2.7% and revenue by 3.8%.

Fewer New Cars, More Used Vehicles on the Roads

Data shows a shift in how people in Madeira are choosing to get around. While registrations for used cars grew by 4.5% in the third quarter of 2024, purchases of new vehicles fell by 5.7% in the first nine months of the year. This trend may suggest a preference for cost-saving options or a move towards public transport as a practical alternative.

More Road Accidents

Despite the rise in public transport usage, Madeira’s roads saw an increase in accidents. Between January and September 2024, 2,838 road accidents were reported, 3.7% more than the same period in 2023. However, there were fewer fatalities, with nine deaths compared to 12 in 2023. The data suggests that encouraging greater use of buses could help reduce traffic and improve safety.
